The Perry/Hupp Family History

Ancestors of Genesee Jack Perry

Generation No. 1

1. Genesee Jack Perry, born April 13, 1917 in Lowell, Washington, Ohio (Source: Birth certificate #91986 incorrectly indicates 4/26, which is Edwards correct date, Genessee always celebrated April 13 as the correct did, as did his mother.); died June 17, 1987 in Canton, Stark, Ohio. He was the son of 2. John Quincy Perry and 3. Lola Lee Parsons. He married (1) Audrey Zella Hupp July 04, 1943 in Canton, Stark, Ohio. She was the daughter of Samuel Martin Hupp and Catherine Eunice Graham.

Notes

Genesee Jack Perry was a hard working family man all of his life; like his father John Quincy and Grandfather Elijah. While in high school, I remember Dad working at least three jobs. He worked the steel mills as a Metallurgical Observer, working the swing shift; he also owned and operated a gas station, both of these full time jobs. He also drove Charter bus trips in his spare time. As a child, I remember frequent trips to visit relatives, both Perry's and Hupp's. My favorite was always going to visit Grandpa Perry on Cat's Creek, Washington Co., OH. There were always lots of cousins, Aunts and Uncles there most Sundays. Dad and the Perry family always enjoyed a love of nature and spent many hours on the farm hunting and fishing the local rivers. I remember with great fondness the annual vacations that always seem to take in the enjoyment of the natural things around us, such as the ocean and mountains.

Generation No. 2

2. John Quincy Perry, born February 02, 1893 in Twelve Pole Creek, Lincoln, West Virginia; died April 18, 1993 in Marietta, Washington, Ohio. He was the son of 4. Elijah Perry and 5. Polly Emily Workman. He married 3. Lola Lee Parsons December 16, 1911.

3. Lola Lee Parsons, born November 21, 1884 in Ripley, Jackson, West Virginia (Source: Death certificate has 11/24/1884, Family state Lola always celebrated the 21st, used here.); died October 04, 1971 in Lowell, Washington, Ohio (Source: Death certificate). She was the daughter of 6. Austin Lee Parsons and 7. Clara Elizabeth Dawkins.

Notes

John Quincy was a Farmer, Lumberjack and Coal Miner. He loved the outdoors and working his farm on Cat's Creek in Washington Co., OH. He spent most of his life in the log cabin he purchased with Lola Lee Parsons. Some of my best memories as child are spending summers on the farm getting up at 5AM and going after the cattle for milking, then doing chores, picking tomatoes and corn using an ol' mule hauling the corn crib through the rows of corn. I remember Grandpa as being a man of great strength, even after he had to enter a nursing home do to the loss of eyesight and hearing. He lived to be a 100 years old. The log cabin still stands on Cat's Creek, much the same as it was then, even though much has changed on the creek over the years. The cabin was owned by my father, Genesee Jack who made extensive repairs, it is now owned by his brother Ellis.

Jack R Perry, 1996

Some confusion exists about John Q's birth date. Some of his children state that his birth year was 1892, this date was put on his gravestone. Audrey Z Hupp, w of Genesee Perry, states that Grandpa said they were incorrect. Based upon the marriage date of Elijah Perry & Polly Emily Workman of June 5, 1892 I believe that the 1893 date to be correct one and have used it in this history.

Notes

Lola Lee Parsons was a homemaker, mother and a school teacher. As a child, I remember the wonderful meals she always prepared and how good they tasted, especially after working in the fields with my Grandfather. She was a Democrat and loved to debate politics with anyone who dared to challenge her views. She raised a large farm family and was the strength that bonded them together.

Her death certificate shows the 11/24/1884 as the birth date. The family states the she always said her birthday was the 21st.

During the Civil War Alexis Parsons dealt in horses, selling them them to both sides. He also bought up land for taxes due and since there were no banks money was borrowed at Gen. McCausland's on the Kanawha River. In the Jackson Herald, April 28, 1950 published the story of "Lex" Parsons captured during the Civil War and being taken before a military court for being thought to be handling to much flour. He was able to prove that the flour which he was caring from Racine, Ohio was for his family and neighbors and was released.

He was an investor in the first railroad that came to Ripley and was one of the organizers of the Bank of Ripley, Aug. 10, 1891. He was elected chairman and served in this position until his death. it is said he had a talent for finances accompanied by a strong common sense.

Notes

Phoebe Casto was a typical pioneer women, she could use a Flint Rock rifle with deadly precision and thought nothing of shooting a bear that came near her home or a wildcat molesting the dogs. She attended the community's "Old Fields School" provided by the State of Virginia ; which offered each child four months schooling for three successive years, free gratis. The name Casto is neither a Spanish or French word. It is an Italian word which means 'Purity'. In Northern Italy there are several families of the people having the surname. It is believed that the name originally was Casteaux which is of Celtic origin, then Casteau, then Casteo, to Casto. The original surname being from Alsace, France( formerly Alsace, Germany).

Notes

Information researched by Jean Leeper 1/25/97:

Henry Marrs is the o&127dest son of Samuel and he stayed in Tazewell County VA when his father Samuel and most of the rest of the family moved to KY in 1893. I have a copy of a deed (Book 1p40) dated 6 day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and one where he and his wife deeded his brother Christopher Marrs for five pounds. "..... a certain parcel or track of land lying on the north side of clinch river containing53 acres thirty poles being part of a tract of one hundred acres granted to Henry Mars land patent bearing date the second day of May one thousand seven hundred-eighty seven and bounded by followeth toward beginning at a large white oak corner to a track of land patent to William Maxwell thence N 38 W74 poles to a black oak and two beaches N 88 W 92 poles to two blackoaks, a white oak and gum saplings S 7 E 6 poles to a stake. N 85 E 174 poles to the beginning with its appenteances and every part and parcel there of to have & to hold........ " (some words hard to read so written as I thought it read)He took over the family land, and when he died in 1830, his land holding hadgrown to 1341 acres

>From Deed Book #5 p 2&12729 and 230 " Whereas Henry Marrs late of the County of Tazewell in the state of Virginia was in his lifetime siezed in fee simple of and in the following estate in the said County of Tazewell to wit about five hundred and seventy acres of Land lying two miles west of Tazewell Courthouse about one hundred rods lying on the head of Clusters(?Bluestone) in the County for said and about fourteen or fifteen hundred acres ____ Crockett's Cove in the County aforesaid and an undivided interest in a piece of land lyi&127ng on the rich Mountain in the County and the said Henry Marrs hath departed this life intestate as to the said estate inconseq&127&127uence where of the same has decended and passed to his nine children with Widows right of dower, and I Samuel Marrs being one of the children and heirs of said Henry Marrs Be it known to all men by these present that I the Samuel Mars of the County and State aforesaid have made ordained authorized constituted and appointed and in my place and stead put James Wynn of the County and state aforesaid my true and lawful attorney for me and in my name and in my behalf to enter into recover and take possession of my part of theafore said land ................"affixed my seal this 24th day of September in the year of Christ 1831. Samuel Mar&127rs (his mark)" It took awhile to link Henry to James Marrs, who married Sally Workman, but additional needed evidence is found i&127n

land records of 1838 and 1841 showing Maxwell, William and James as those receiving his land after his death. (summarized under James). We easily go back to James Marrs who married Sally Workman 26 Dec 1810 in Tazewell Co. VA and evidence gathered by man&127y family members lists John, Thomas, James, David W., Wesley and Samuel as James' sons.

Some books do not correctly connect Henry and James as I do and from information I have gained from records searched, I believe them to be wrong. (This is understandable as we now have much more information available to search than they did.) &127The two books I looked at are "MARRS" by Mabel Marrsand "MARRS AND ALLIED FAMILIES" by {4 sisters}

>From book "MARRS" by Mabel Marrs we find {8*} a Samuel whose son {9*} Henry married Elizabeth Maxwell. "MARRS" by Mabel Marrs indicate that Henry's son&127James was born ca 1810 and that our James was the son of Samuel who was the son of Henry. That can not be true as {56*} Samuel was born in 1799. The book "MARRS AND ALLIED FAMILIES" by {4 Sisters} does

not have James listed as a child.

The 1830 Tazewell&127l County VA federal census has Maxwell Marrs and James Marrsliving in the same twp. and that James Marrs would had to be born about1888/90 to be the father of the children listed living with him. Also in censes James is ca ten years older than Maxwell. M&127axwell was listed as born in 1887 in Mabel Marrs book, but by census is ten years younger, see

Maxwell(#29) and for James go to James (#22)

Wish I had a listing of his children from his probate. I am not sure my list is correct, as Oliva was on that list until I removed it. Look below to see list of living children, at the time of his death.

Note: Sept 1, 1995 I received some land transactions in the mail showing a list of nine living children. Olivia was not on that list but a Polly and Sinia was that I did not have at that time. John, Thomas, Henry, Charles and Robert were not on that list of nine living heirs.

Children listed are: 1. James Marrs and Sally his wife; 2. Jane Brooks and James her hus.; 3. Polly Maxwell and Thomas her hus.; 4. Sina Marrs; 5.Samuel Marrs; 6. Maxwell Marrs and Jane his wife; 7. Sally Workman and Moses her hus; 8. Rebecca Brooks and John her h&127us.; and 9. William Marrs (Heirs of Henry Marrs deceased) dated 27 March 1835

One of the first settlers of Jackson co, WV locating at the junction of Mill Creek and Sycamore creek, some twelve miles from the river. His home was on the rich, alluvial bottom on the bank of the main creek, just above the mouth of Sycamore in 1801. In the early years he did not even own a horse, but did have a cow. He raised corn, obtained salt from a site near Charleston, WV and hunted and fished for the balance of their food and clothing.

During the War of 1812 William Parsons recruited a company of soldiers and marched to Norfork where many of his men became sick with camp fever. He gained a Captaincy in the 6th Regiment, Virginia militia. On July 30, 1977 the Lord Calvert Chapter of the Daughters of 1812 dedicated a marker in his memory in the Frozen Camp Cemetery.

Researched by Jean Leeper 1/25/97:

A few years after his marriage he removed to Rockbridge County Virginia, butremained there but a short time, when he move to what is now Tazewell County VA. We link up with this Samuel Marrs who settled In Thompson's Valley,Taze&127well Co., VA in 1773 - p 344 "BICKLEY'S HISTORY OF TAZEWELL COUNTY, VA"and his wife Francina Bradshaw died there about 1775. She had brothers,James, John and Christopher Bradshaw. In 1793 he removed to Jassemine County KY and settled on the Catnip Hill Road on a small farm of 100 acres more orless bought of a Mr. Hampton for 105 pounds. Samuel lived on this farm until his death at age 77. Gaines Tax List 1795 has Samuel in Mercer County, KY. A Samuel Marrs in Barron County in 1800 and a Samuel Mars in Granklin County 8/10/1801. It was believed he was a small active man. He and his last wifeare buried in the graveyard at the old place. Also in the Tazewell County area in 1774 there are Marrs by the names of John or Joseph who helped fight the Indians. p &127299 of "HISTORY OF TAZEWELL CO. AND SW VA" by Wm. C Pendleton c 1920. In a letter to Major Campbell 30th Sept 1774 Captain Smith lists at the foot of his letter a list of men he was taking with him "to assist the alarmed garrison at Castle Woods." Included are: John Mares (Marrs), Joseph Mares (Marrs), and Thomas Maxwell. It also states on that page "Nearly every man on roll was from the Clinch section, now in Tazewell Co..."

About 1773 Samuel and Francina bought land in Thompson Valley in the area of t&127&127&127azewell, VA. The Log Cabin set on the Northside of Clinch River. Here is where Francina (Bradshaw) MARRS is buried. She was buried on the south hill behind the log cabin. There are 10 or 11 graves there. Nothing is known of her parents. Notes

Researched by Jean Leeper 1/25/97:

Found a record of Christopher Bradshaw who died intestate 3/26/1756 in Chanceford Twp., York County, PA It lists his minor sons John b. ca 1744 and Clement b. ca 1746. Francina is the right age to fit with these two in age. At age fourteen she may have not been listed as a minor as she was married by ca1760. I at present can not prove this relationship.

We do know that Marr's relative's said she had brothers, John, James and Christopher. There is a town Bradshaw just over the line into WV from Tazewell County, VA.

Samuel and Francina have a son named Christopher. So I feel there is a good possibility there is a link.

Child of Samuel Marrs and Francina Bradshaw is:

Notes

During the American Revolutionary War Charles Parsons entered service as a private at Romney, Hampshire Co. in the Virginia Militia in the Company of Captain John Harness' Virginia Rangers (1775). He served as a Scout from Harrison County Virginia in 1792. It was about this time , that he came from Fort Buckhannon to the Ohio Valley with his family and settled on the fifth bottom south of the Little Kanawha River known as Warth's Bottom, where an industrial facility now is located.

Charles Parsons was first listed on the tax lists of Kanawha County in 1802. He died Nov. 4, 1823 and was buried in the Frozen Camp Cemetery of the Upper Mill Creek Baptist Church. The Ravenswood Chapter of the national Sons and Daughters of the American revolution placed a marker at the grave 1970.

Notes

In England, in the year 1400, lived one John Parr, who had twelve sons born to him, and as these sons grew to manhood, they became known as Parr's sons. This name spelled Parrssons, until the beginning of the last century when some of the middle letters were dropped, leaving the name as it is today.

In the early colonial days in this country, two brothers by the name of Parsons, and descendants of the original John Parr came to America about 1635, settling in Virginia and the other in New England near Boston. The name of Thomas, William, James, and John Parsons appear in the history of the first settler of Jamestown, 1621. Source: Virginia Parsons Family History and Record by McCabe
